e-Finance for Digital and Financial Investments acquires Tamweely, the leading Egyptian microfinance player, from a consortium comprising SPE Capital, the EBRD, TCV and BII

Cairo, 12 August 2026

Tamweely, a leading MSME and non-banking financial services provider in Egypt, is entering a new phase of development following the sale of the company by a consortium of investors comprising SPE PEF III (SPE Capital), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Tanmiya Capital Ventures (TCV) and British International Investment (BII).

Founded in 2017, Tamweely provides financing to micro, small and medium enterprises across Egypt, serving more than 130,000 active clients, over half of them women. Over the course of the consortium's partnership, which began in December 2024, the company opened 45 new branches to take its network past 250, launched a dedicated SME lending business alongside its core microfinance franchise, and broadened its product suite with FRA-approved Islamic financing and revolver products. It upgraded its core banking and credit-decisioning platform, introduced digital onboarding and e-contracting, and enabled loan disbursement through digital wallets. Tamweely also adopted a formal gender strategy and a comprehensive ESG and impact action plan, embedding impact objectives into how the business is managed. Under these, the company extended financing to more than 13,000 women entrepreneurs through a purpose-built product line, created 298 net new jobs, and in 2025 became one of only two Egyptian institutions to hold CERISE+SPTF Client Protection Gold certification, the highest standard in global microfinance

Tamweely intends to build on the impact agenda established during the consortium's ownership, continuing to deepen its reach among underserved micro and small enterprises across Egypt, advance its gender strategy and the participation of women entrepreneurs in its portfolio, and uphold the client protection and governance standards recognised by its Gold certification.

Mr. Ahmed El Oraby, Partner, and Mr. Nabil Triki, Managing Partner and CEO at SPE Capital, said:“When we invested in Tamweely, our thesis was that Egypt's underserved MSMEs needed not just capital, but a genuinely digital lender. Over our ownership we worked with Ahmed Khorched and his team to build the infrastructure, organization and governance to deliver that at scale, and the company today is well positioned for its next phase of growth. This transaction is a strong outcome for our investors and a clear demonstration of the SPE Capital model: partnering with strong local management teams, institutionalizing businesses and ultimately bringing in owners who can take them to the next stage. We are proud of the impact Tamweely has delivered for micro and small entrepreneurs across Egypt, and confident that impact will deepen in the years ahead. We are equally excited to partner with e-Finance in unlocking Tamweely's full potential and scaling its impact footprint”

Mr. Mohamed Mahgoub, Managing Partner at Tanmiya Capital Ventures (TCV), said: “Our partnership with Tamweely reflects TCV’s strategy of backing strong management teams and helping promising Egyptian businesses achieve institutional scale. We are proud of the progress made in strengthening the company’s governance, digital capabilities and product offering while expanding access to finance for underserved businesses. Looking forward to seeing eFinance unlock what Tamweely can become”

Mr Alain Rassi, Head of Equity Investments in Financial Services, Middle East and Africa (EBRD), said: “We are very proud of the impact that Tamweely has had on micro and small entrepreneurs in Egypt under our ownership and of the significant progress achieved in developing the business. This included expanding the company's product offering to include SME lending and micro-leasing, strengthening governance through the adoption of best practices in lending and risk management, and advancing key digital initiatives. We wish Tamweely and its management team continued success under the new ownership.”

Mrs. Kate Perkins, Investment Director in Financial Services at British International Investment (BII) said: “Since our investment, Tamweely has continued to drive sustainable financial inclusion at scale and been a true champion to micro and small enterprises in Egypt. Through our investment, BII was pleased to support a gender action plan to improve diversity at the company and expand outcomes for female customers, reflecting our broader commitment to advancing inclusive economic growth in Egypt. We look forward to seeing Tamweely further implement and institutionalize this strategy in its next chapter.”

Mr. Ahmed Khorched, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Tamweely, said: “We are proud of Tamweely’s track record and milestones achieved since the partnership started with SPE, TCV, EBRD and BII. This transaction is a natural next step for Tamweely and a significant opportunity to expand our impact. By combining our lending expertise and nationwide presence with eFinance’s digital infrastructure and reach, we can bring responsible financing to more MSMEs across Egypt. Together, we have the opportunity to make finance more accessible, more data-driven and better aligned with the needs of the businesses that drive our economy”

The selling consortium was advised by Matouk Bassiouny & Hennawy, Dentons, Stephenson Harwood, and BLC Robert & Associates (legal advisors) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (tax structuring advisor). Completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, including approval of the Financial Regulatory Authority and the Egyptian Competition Authority, and the satisfaction of certain conditions agreed between the parties.
